| Resumo: | This article explores the expressions of memory, representation, and culture that surround the secular tradition of Reza Pr’as Almas, a practice that has not only endured through time but has also adapted and reinvented itself within a regional Brazilian context. Also known as the Procession of the Penitents, Reza Pr’as Almas is a cultural and religious manifestation deeply intertwined with the history and identity of various communities in Brazil, particularly in the state of Goiás. Through an interdisciplinary analysis, we discuss how this religious ritual serves as a vehicle for the expression of faith, the perpetuation of collective memory, and the representation of local beliefs and values. We highlight the practice in the city of Morrinhos, in southern Goiás, identifying how this tradition has been shaped by historical circumstances. Reza Pr’as Almas thus emerges not only as a religious practice but as a cultural phenomenon of a rural community, preserving the dynamics of memory and representation while simultaneously reflecting and constructing the community's cultural identity. By delving into the nuances of this tradition, this article contributes to a deeper understanding of the complex interactions between religion, culture, and memory in Brazil, and how these elements interweave to form popular culture as a social construct rooted in faith and devotion. |
