| Sumario: | This work shows the fractographic study of fracture surfaces resulting from static loadings in tension and compression of thermoplastic composites based on polypropylene (PP) and poly(propylene-co-ethylene) (PP-PE) reinforced with continuous carbon fibers (CF). The PP-PE matrix was modified by two agents called AM1 (containing maleic anhydride) and AM2 (containing an elastomeric agent), respectively. Thus, four different laminates were analyzed - CF/PP, CF/PP-PE, CF/PP-PE(AM1) and CF/PP-PE(AM2). Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and optical stereoscopy of the fracture surfaces and rheological analyses of the polymeric matrices were performed. SEM analyses showed the fractographic aspects of the fractured surfaces and allowed to evaluate the fiber/matrix interfacial adhesion. The poor adhesion is indicated by both the presence of fiber impressions on the matrix rich regions and fiber surfaces totally unprotected of polymeric matrix. These observations were more evident for the CF/PP, CF/PP-PE and CF/PP-PE(AM2) laminates. Moreover, the more consistent adhesion is observed for the CF/PP-PE(AM1) laminate, attributed to the maleic anhydride presence, that favored a good interaction between the constituents of this laminate. These observations are consistent with the results of mechanical tests of tension and compression available in the literature for the same laminates. In this case, the rheological results show that the viscosity of the polymeric matrices did not influence the reinforcement wetting. |
