Sumario:The paper studies the effects of economic policies adopted in the period 1930-2007 on the behavior of the income elasticities of demand for imports and exports of the Brazilian economy, under the balance-of-payments-constrained growth model. Based on a model in first differences estimated by least squares, the study identifies the historical periods when there were breaks in these parameters and related then to policies followed. The results indicate that although the growth of a country is restricted by the structure of its foreign trade, this structure can be modified by governmental policies.
