Sumario:This study seeks to understand, from a gender perspective, the role of prison in society throughout history, addressing the situation of women and their criminalization process during the period of rise of prisons and custodial sentences. By the way, the emergence of gender-segmented prison institutions in Brazil and their relationship with religious assistance in the state of Ceará is contextualized. To this end, a qualitative approach was adopted using bibliographic and documentary research.
