Sumario:The end of 2019 was marked by the emergence and rise of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic caused by the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) virus. In particular, COVID-19 has been regarded as a disease strongly related with the environment. Therefore, the aim of the present study was to investigate the association between environmental factors related to ecosystems and hygiene and the development of COVID-19. We conducted a review of the literature published in PubMed, Medline, SciELO, and Google Scholar databases. Thereafter, we consolidated the results shortlisted from the bibliographic survey, and after applying the exclusion criteria, we scrutinized seven articles for an integrative review. The results obtained showed that socioeconomic factors including living conditions in poor and crowded communities, water quality, and sewage collection and treatment are relevant in the disease transmission process. However, we noted a dearth of articles that specifically addressed the general environmental aspects related to the ecosystem. Thus, we concluded that highlighting the themes involving the relationship between human inhabitation and the environment is necessary while debating on the COVID-19 pandemic as well as other infectious diseases.
