Through a close dialogue with Reinhart Koselleck and an Italian historiographical tradition based on micro-history, I intend to reflect on two sets of issues that shaped the research. The first is the political and historical importance of the memory in which I intended to interfere with: the memory of the Duke of Caxias. The other is more theoretical, about writing a thesis in history based on the uniqueness of a character’s life.Nesse artigo pretendo pensar sobre o conceito de experiência e seus vínculos com a produção de conhecimento em história, a partir de uma reflexão sobre o percurso, as escolhas e intervenções metodológicas realizadas por mim ao deparar-me com a tarefa de escrever uma tese biográfica, e as experiências vividas durante a própria pesquisa. Por meio de um diálogo estreito com Reinhart Koselleck e uma tradição historiográfica italiana fundada na micro-história, procuro refletir sobre dois conjuntos de problemas que estruturaram a pesquisa. O primeiro deles é o peso político e histórico da memória na qual pretendia interferir: a do duque de Caxias.
