| Sumario: | As part of the program for the Abralin em Cena 16 event, about Linguistics communication, Arika Okrent was interviewed (in English). An edited version of the interview given by Arika Okrent is published on Abralin's Youtube channel. In the interview, Arika Okrent talks about her experience in popularizing Linguistics in different media: she is the author of two books and many popularization videos. She explained the differences between the media explored by her and the challenges faced by Linguistics communicators – who are linguists used to interact with the academic public. Finally, Arika Okrent describes what she considers essential for effective communication with non-specialized audiences: taking linguistic issues that interest the audience, investigating them driven by one’s own curiosity, and sharing this journey with the audience. This means that Linguistics communication does not feature as a mere simplification of academic language or the translation of results achieved in Linguistics, but the creation of a new product that involves the non-specialized public. |
