Resumo:Purpose: To explore the types of financial reporting fraud occurring in publicly traded Brazilian companies. Methodology: The Administrative Sanctioning Processes (PAS) of the Securities and Exchange Commission (CVM) were analyzed and the fraud taxonomy was developed. Results: Suggest the following taxonomy: overestimation of assets, transactions with related parties, diversion of funds to offshore entities, overestimation of loss of asset value (impairment), overestimation of income, fictitious income, and underestimation of expenses. Contributions of the Study: The study brings to the attention of academics, regulators, investors, and companies the types of fraud carried out. Knowledge of the fraud taxonomy draws the regulator's attention to preventively look for these types of fraud in published financial reports. Discussions on the taxonomy of fraud in financial reports bring to the attention of academics and professionals (accountants, auditors, and administrators) the forms that distortions in accounting information can take. For auditors (internal or external) and internal control professionals, the taxonomy of fraud in financial reports allows them to act preventively to avoid or limit the occurrence of these frauds. There was a lack of common types of fraud in the Brazilian market. This research seeks to contribute by exploring the types of financial reporting fraud that occur in Brazilian publicly traded companies.
