| Sumario: | The present work examines the formulation of a critical ethos for the administration of the health crisis of the COVID-19 by the Brazilian Government in a cover of the Extra newspaper of March 2021. The cover reports the Brazil’s first worldwide position in number of daily deaths by the new coronavirus through one of the most used phrases by the current president during the 2018 elections: “Brazil above all”. The objective is to analyze the ethos elaborated by the newspaper's cover and what effects of meaning it produces. The theoretical framework is located in the reflections on descabatility, scenography and ethos by Dominique Maingueneau (2008b, 2018, 2020). It is concluded that, despite using an apparently neutral phrase and without explicit attacks to the Government, the newspaper Extra manages to transmit a critical sense effect to the federal administration by relying on the pre-discursive ethos of the current president for the production of a effective ethos of opposition to the policy of the crisis without making a nominal criticism. |
