| Summary: | This article examines the definitions of "Fujão", "fugião e "fugido" (variations of "escaped") in the Portuguese dictionaries of Moraes Silva, Eduardo Faria and Caldas Aulete, from Nineteenth Century. The analysis show that, although in the advertisement of slave escape on the papers at that time slaves are determined as "fugidos", the definition of this word does not refer to the slave, but to uses of the literature of the períod. Reference to the slave appears in the two other words analyzed. |
