| Resumo: | The article analyzes the educational philosophy of Father Manuel da Nóbrega, in his work “Dialogue on the conversion of the gentile”, written in 1556 and discusses the conception of education of the Society of Jesus. The work in question is the first on the subject of written mission in Brazil in the period of Portuguese America. Manuel da Nóbrega's pastoral work boosted the creation of the first schools in Brazil, with the purpose of converting the indigenous people, especially their children. The missionary and educational effort idealized by the Society of Jesus, as can be seen in Nóbrega's writings, were essential strategic activities, and of a political nature. It is a bibliographic study in a historical approach. The text is divided into two sections: the first deals with Manuel da Nóbrega and the Society of Jesus; and in the second, he discusses the educational philosophy of the Jesuits. To carry out the research, we analyzed the text “Dialogue on the conversion of the gentile”. The analysis of Nóbrega's thought allows us to understand the dynamics of conversion practices and also the territorial expansion of the Portuguese Crown. |
