Descripción
Sumario:This study was conducted to analyze bitten or struck by dog as health relevance injury or external cause in Minas Gerais State, period 2004-2008. This study population refers to 65 patients admitted with this injury at the Hospital João XXIII, Fundação Hospitalar do Estado de Minas Gerais (HJXXIII-FHEMIG)in Belo Horizonte, Minas Gerais, originating from areas previously determined as low or no risk for human rabies transmitted by dogs within July 2004 to April 2008 period. The study was observational time series. Table was created with data contained at medical records. In the descriptive analysis characteristics were verified as described in the literature, such as more frequent in males, aged from five to nine years and that demanded high complexity procedures (HCPs), such as plastic surgery. There were no deaths. Most of the time the dog was known and there was over-prescription post-exposure prophylaxis, even with low risk for human rabies. Some were inconsistent, especially with respect to children under five years old. Wrist and hand were the most found lesion locations, contrary to the expected (head and neck). In the analysis, it was noticed that there was no protocols standardization, which can cause harm to patients and hospitalization real costs increasing. In statistical analysis, some associations (p<0,05) found do not have clinical and epidemiological significance. Others could not be performed because filled data at medical records were incomplete, which indicates the need for the Trauma Registry (RT) use, not implemented in the Hospital João XXIII. Theres underreporting disease, which is not captured by the deployed hospital sentinel system. It is unequal the access to the state referral center. A policies, especially in health and education directed to the State cultural and epidemiological reality will recognize it as such and effectively intervene.
