| Resumo: | This article presents some results of our master's research in Geography, on urban mobility in Juiz de Fora/MG. It aims to present the origin and evolution of local urban public transport between 1875 and 1997. The study was based on the regulatory frameworks of the municipal transport system and on a specific bibliography on the subject. The results established an overview of the evolution of urban mobility in public transport, from trams powered by animal traction, its transition to electric models, to the period of operationalization of the suburban train called "Xangai". It is concluded that Juiz de Fora, a pioneer in the State in introducing urban rail passenger transport, since the late nineteenth century, surrendered to the highwayrism of urban buses, from 1970, even having achieved, for almost a century of its history, a great success from its tracks. |
