| Sumario: | The animacy scale has been used to describe the development of Differential Object Marking (DOM). However, empirical evidence from Romance languages shows that this scale cannot describe some characteristics of DOM, such as the tendency of lack with first- and second-person pronouns (VON HEUSINGER; GÁSPÁR, 2008; IRIMIA; PINEDA, 2019). This paper investigates the adequacy of the animacy scale to describe the DOM cases in the history of Portuguese. I analyzed texts written by Portuguese authors from the 16th to the 19th century. The preliminary results indicate that taking animacy as a binary property allows us to make predictions about the occurrences and the types of marked objects. Also, it can explain the unexpected cases of DOM. |
