Resumo:In the 1970s, Hilary Putnam defended the thesis that natural kinds designators, words such as “water”, “tiger” and “gold”, are indexicals, because their meaning change in each context. However, Tyler Burge rejected this argument, and Putnam came to adopt his position. The rejection of Burge is supported by the distinction between beliefs de re and beliefs de dicto. In this article we will see the points of contact between the positions of Putnam and Burge, the position of Putnam in 1970s, the main points of Burge’s argument against the indexicality of natural kinds names, and the difference between beliefs de re and beliefs de dicto.
