| Resumo: | Introduction: The City of Rio de Janeiro has implemented the “Academia Rio Ar Livre (RAL)” project in public spaces with the intent of promoting health and quality of life, especially for elderly people. In order to longitudinally monitor the repercussion of this project, it is necessary to map the functional and psychological conditions of elderly people enrolled in the RALs. Objectives: Thus, this study aimed to analyze the physical function and psychological profiles of elderly people who use the Rio de Janeiro RALs. Method: Two hundred ninety-four volunteers of both sexes, with an average age of 68.6±6.6 years, were selected to respond to both the Geriatric Depression Scale and the (WHOQOL-OLD) quality of life questionnaires. They also took the Rikli and Jones Senior Fitness Test. Results: The participants possessed recommended levels of functional fitness and high levels of quality of life, showing no signs of depression. Conclusion: The RALs appear to contribute to the maintenance of physical, functional and psychological fitness of elderly people. |
