Descripción
Sumario:This article analyzes the infestation of the disease surra, caused by the protozoan Trypanosoma evansi, among horses that were used for raising cattle in Pará, between 1870-1889, and the efforts of human and non-human actors to combat it. When investigating documents such as newspapers and reports from provincial presidents, from the perspective of environmental history and the history of animals, one perceives a diversity of agents involved in this fight, treatment attempts related to scientific medicine and/or popular medicine, change of sensitivity in relation to horses and the intensification of the debate about the importance of science in Brazil.
