| Sumario: | Introduction: Subcutaneous emphysema happens when the compressed air is introduced in soft tissues from the facial plans through a discontinued intraoral barrier and it has been associated to some cases in consequence of dental treatments, like extraction of the third molar and endodontic treatments. The precocious diagnostics and the correct management are fundamental to the prevention of the injury progression and future complications, knowing that the emphysema can spread through deep facial plans of the neck, occasioning retropharyngeal emphysema, and, still can cause pneumothorax and pneumomediastinum. Objective: Evaluate the occurrence of the subcutaneous emphysema in the state of Rio Grande do Sul. Methodology: A questionnaire was sent by e-mail to the professional specialists in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery (OMFS), periodontics and endodontics registered in Regional Council of Dentistry (CRO-RS), containing 8 questions: specialty, knowledge about the subcutaneous emphysema and cause, number of surgery monthly realized, most commonly used instrument for surgical procedure, instrument involved in the known or witnessed cases of emphysema, instrument used to dry the root canals in case of endodontic, if you have already had a patient with subcutaneous emphysema and you have heard about it during the clinical practice. Results: Were sent 1954 questionnaires, getting 260 answers within the search criteria (13.3%). The vast majority of the sample (89.1%) reported having knowledge about emphysema and its complications and 28 (10.7%) professionals already had cases related to dental procedures. Conclusions: The knowledge of dentistry professionals about subcutaneous emphysema is important, because from this study we observed that, although rare, 10.7% of respondents already had emphysema subcutaneous cases related to dental procedures. |
