| Sumario: | This article aims to discuss the remainings and discontinuities of the ancient epic gender in Friar José de Santa Rita Durão’s Caramuru – Poema Épico do Descobrimento da Bahia (1781). I intend to demonstrate that the models from Classical Greece and Rome’s epic poetry both inspire and remain in this Brazilian epic poem from the late 18th century, when Modernity was about to erupt in History, though, at the same time, those very models are renewed (or updated) according to the specific purposes of the author, considering the political and religious context in which he is placed. |
