Description
Summary:The article analyzes four different orthographies of the Nheengatu language, currently in use by speaking communities, in the Amazon, and in their schools. The work points out the weaknesses and eventual inconsistencies of each orthography adopted in the villages, and informs what principles and criteria oriented the definition of an orthography to be used in a specific project that involves an important communication and information resource: mobile phones. The text also points out outstanding problems in this specific orthography, which should be taken into account if, or when, the newly created Academy of the Nheengatu Language decides to discuss the issue of spelling standardization.
