| Summary: | The intestinal protozoan parasites Cryptosporidium and Giardia have deservedmuch attention by the researchers, due to its association with acute and chronicdiarrheic diseases, both in immunocompromised and immunocompetentindividuals. The occurrence of waterborne and foodborne outbreaks enhancetheir importance to Public Health. In May 2007, the II International Giardia andCryptosporidium Conference was held to discuss the current state of knowledge andto identify effective control strategies, to discuss and transmit pertinent informationand technologies, and to encourage young scientists. The purpose of this paperis to spread this information among the Brazilian scientific community. Duringthe event, numerous aspects of the biology of these parasites were discussed, aswell as advances in new detection and molecular characterization methodologies, fundamental to the knowledge of the epidemiology of each species, and proteomicsstudies that could point out new methods to control Giardia and Cryptosporidium. |
