Descripción
Sumario:This paper presents the results of a research made with the intent to gather up sociolinguistic data on the Wai Wai people who migrated to Santarém/PA, analyzing the monolingualism; bi- and/or plurilingualism of thoses indigenous, the functional value and the speakers’ attitude as regards to the languages in their repertoire. This study was conducted under Qualitative Sociolinguistics’ theoretical and methodological approach, as of bibliographical research and, mainly, through field research. Result showed that seven languages are part of Wai Wai’s linguistic repertoire: Wai Wai, Hixkaryána, Xeréw, Katuéna, Tyrió, Portuguese and English; presenting different skills degree when it comes to understanding, speech, reading and writing. It was also found that, although the Wai Wai language remains alive in the family of the subjects in the research, it has already started to lose its function in important domains that previously belonged to it, such as the home domain.
