| Sumario: | Hemoglobinopathies represent a severe public health problem due to its high frequency and pathogenic consequences. This investigation aimed at evaluating the Neonatal Screening National Program for Hemoglobinopathies in Maranhão State, in 2008, by analyzing reports at disposal at public services and State Secretary of Health. The features analyzed were the program implementation in all of the cities of Maranhão and the consonance with the Federal Health Ministry for the human resources and the service disclosure. At the sample collection, 60.4% of children aged from eight days to one month. The mean period of time between the sample collection and its receipt was 37 days. A total of 99.498 hemoglobinopathies tests were carried out, and 4.8% of them showed abnormal profiles. The most frequent alteration was falciform trace (1/25.4). In 2008, the program coverage was of 81.57%. This study indicated the need in improving both the screening service and the management indicators, also to ameliorate the hemoglobin diseases diagnosis and the preventive intervention, considering the high frequency of these diseases in Maranhão State. |
