| Sumario: | This study describes experiences of prejudice and discrimination by blackwomen in a public university and their coping strategies. A descriptive qualitative studywas conducted through interviews with 15 women between the ages of 22 to 55. The datacollected were submitted to content analysis giving rise to the categories: conceptionsabout being a black woman; experiences of prejudice and discrimination in the university;strategies for coping with prejudice and discrimination. It has been found that the conceptof being a black woman necessarily involves the challenge of constructing a positiveself-image and identity and a perspective of resistance. Prejudice and discrimination atthe university have manifested themselves through experiences that indicate hostility,rejection, and impediments. The strategies of coping with prejudice and discriminationinvolve family support, involvement with aesthetics, religiosity and ancestry of Africanmatrix and the participation in organized groups of black students within the university. |
