Sumario:In this research, we analyze the linguistic variation treatment in a Portuguese Language High School textbook and reflect upon the guidance shown by the book in relation to the topic. For this study, we selected as corpus for observation/investigation the work entitled Língua Portuguesa: linguagem e interação (Portuguese Language: language and interaction), written by Faraco, Moura and Maruxo Júnior (2011), intended for high school students. We carried out a descriptive study with a qualitative approach, observing the treatment given to the variation, the concepts of right and wrong and linguistic bias. The analyzed book demonstrates that, despite not being in a desired situation of mother tongue teaching, we realize the concern of the authors to incorporate studies on the basis of heterogeneity and linguistic diversity substantiated by Sociolinguistics. However, it is important to emphasize that without a solid academic-scientific background and adequate knowledge of Sociolinguistics by the Portuguese language teacher, the textbook alone, no matter how well prepared it is, will not result in the teaching/learning of a native language that respects the linguistic diversity and multiculturalism of the speakers.
