Sumario:The present study deals with the temporal analysis and calculation of built-up areas using the BAEM method. As data source, images from the Landsat 8 satellite system of the Serra da Tiririca State Park, in Niterói, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, referring to the years 2013 and 2018 were used. The BAEM method uses the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI), the Modified Normalized Difference Water Index (MNDWI) and the Modified Normalized Difference Building Index (NDBIm). In addition, principal component analyses (PCA) were applied to eliminate data redundancies present in the multispectral bands, allowing the refinement of the results. The result of the quantification of built-up areas in the two years evaluated showed that there was an increase of irregular constructions within the park boundaries. The BAEM method proved to be efficient in determining the built-up areas in comparison with the results obtained individually by each index, proving that this method can be used to evaluate and monitor urban growth in preservation areas and in other areas.
