Panoan languages. This article aims to investigate the Case system that the Yawanawá grammar activates both in the transitive and intransitive clauses. This language is spoken by the Yawanawá people, in the state of Acre, and is affiliated to the Panoan linguistic family. We argue against the hypothesis, assumed in the literature, according to which this language exhibits two Case systems: the nominative-accusative alignment [(A≠(S=O))] and ergative-absolutive alignment [(A=S)≠O))]. We come to the conclusion that there is not a split ergativity system in Yawanawá, since the ergative Case is systematically extended to the (A) and (S) pronominal subjects and to (A) non-pronominal subjects. In sum, we propose that the (A) and (S) subjects, which carry the [+participant, +/-speaker] features and also the non-pronominal subjects (A) of transitive verbs uniformly receive the ergative Case. We also assume that the non-pronominal subject (S) of intransitive verbs has its abstract Case valued as nominative and the object gets its Case valued as the accusative. In conclusion, we argue that Yawanawá exhibits a tripartite Case system in the sense that three abstract Cases are activated in order to mark the core arguments (A), (S) e (O). The data used were taken from Paula’s (2004) Ph.D dissertation and Camargo-Tavares’ (2013) master manuscript.
