| Sumario: | The guaco (Mikania glomerata) is a plant originated from Brazil that is known by its expectorant properties. The Department of Inspection of Products from Animal Origin, linked to the Agricultural Ministry of Brazil, has made a resolution on 19/06/2003, related to honey that have vegetal extracts aggregated to it. Also, the Sanitary Vigilance National Agency of Brazil (ANVISA) has made a public consult in 06/11/03 regarding to the regulation of products for phytotherapeutic products. These considerations take into account the necessity of to elaborate legal rules and legal analytic procedures based on scientific literature. These considerations led us to develop a methodology to detect the coumarin in honey that has guaco aggregated to it. The method uses a High Performance Liquid Chromatography with diode-array detector equipment. This method may be a reliable qualitative method to detect and quantify the guaco coumarin in commercial honey claiming to have Mikania glomerata plant extract in them. |
