Sumario:The interpretation of transitivity in grammars depends on the theoretical perspective – and, consequently, the approach adopted by the authors (morphological, structuralist, functionalist, generativist etc.) -, as well as on the aims the grammar is meant to achieve (theoretical, descriptive, normative-prescriptive). Transitivity is regarded from the two different viewpoints: lexical-syntactic and structural-syntactic. In the first case it is looked upon as a property of a given word – a transitive verb that achieves its full lexical properties (or a particular shade of meaning) within the syntactic group where it governs the direct object. In the second case transitivity is regarded as a property of syntactic structure where the core is a verb, transitive or intransitive. The paper analyses the link between the way transitivity is looked upon (lexical-syntactic or structural-syntactic approach) and the theoretic vs normative-prescriptive type of grammar.
