| Sumario: | The objective of this article is to analyze the occurrences of smallpox in Goiás, in the second half of the 19th century, observing the State’s action for its prevention and the organization of measures to contain the spread of the disease. How did physicians, administrators and lay people act to contain the epidemic risk? And what was the pattern of action of the public administration to reduce the threat of the spread of the disease? The theoretical referential is based on the observations pointed by Pierre Damon about the role of physicians and lay people in the application and propagation of the vaccine. The methodology adopted was the interpretation of sources composed of journalisticarticles (Tribuna Livre, Correio Oficial, Semanário Oficial and O publicador Goyano), documents produced by the public administration (Reports of provincial/state presidents) and medical articles. |
