Resumo:My goal is to study the works of Fernão Mendes Pinto and Diogo do Couto, authors who participated in the 16th century Portuguese maritime expansion process, and wrote about this event critically, using satire to simultaneously distort and depict the reality of the situation. Furthermore Fernão Mendes Pinto and Diogo do Couto illuminate in their works different points of view coming from ‘the other’, that would orientate the expansion of Portugal, and with it, even though not even writing specifically about Portuguese America, they help to understand the contact between Portuguese settlers and the natives in the ands of Brazil.
