Sumario:In the past ten years, the world has been facing several political and social turbulences, largely related to the crises and dilemmas faced by democracies. This paper aims to analyze the political meaning of neoliberalism, its effects on contemporary society, and its relation to the main political crises of the democratic system. Finally, to present some challenges and alternatives to be faced in the medium and long term. For this purpose, a review of recent bibliography on these themes will be carried out with different theoretical approaches and information pertinent to the understanding of neoliberalism and its relation with the problematic of democracy in the 21st century. By analyzing these approaches, it is observed that neoliberal ideology ratifies exploitative and authoritarian practices that ultimately drive its functioning and success in different ways. It highlights the fact that this process occurs within democratic countries, which leads to the conclusion that neoliberalism, or its harmful effects, collaborates in the wearing down and corrosion of democracies from within.
