| Sumario: | The article covers two essays on Vieira's texts published in the first half of rhe XVII cencury, which deal with the position to be taken by Portuguese kings in iew of "Dutch invasions" in Brazil. The first one is a Paper, an objective writing, chac deals wich faces and offers some comments that would help Portuguese mandataries choose between peace agreements and the continuation of war. Vieira analyzes the chances Portugal would have and che effects upon the Portuguese empire. The second cexc, fully commenced, is a Sermon. Typical ofVieira's sermons, this one has a language differenc from that of the Paper, its colors are vivid, emotion drives the text. It has as main center of attention the "divine action" - God's hand - in that conflict. Both cexts are marked by the celeological nature ofVieirian discourse as well as by his desire to maintain and expand che Portuguese em pire. |
