Light filth in dried foods - Microscopic method evaluation

| Summary: | The officia1 methodology proposed for light filth by AOAC 980.27, from barley.oatmeal, and mixed dry infant cereals, was tested for dried soups. Soup samples were artificialy contamined with insects fragments: heads, torax-abdomen, elytral squares, mites and rodents hairs fragments. The two solvents effects were analysed, 40% isopropanol and 60% ethanol and mixtures of them I: 1,3: 1, to deffating and flotation of dried soups samples. Average recoveries of insect fragrnents, mites and rodent hairs were 92,6%, 43% and 53%, respectively for the proposed method (40% isopropanol and 60% ethanol, 3:1). These results were not significantly different (p<0,05) than the official method 980.27 that were found an of average recoveries of 93,3% for insect fragments, 39% for mites, and 61% for rodent hairs. The modifiedAOAC 980.27 method (40% isopropanol and 60% ethanol, 3: 1) was more efficient for recovery of insect fragments.The light filth evaluation in commercial dried soups with the proposed method was carried out in 62 samples (of two differents brands, A and B), divided into two lots each one with 31 samples. The dried soups were produced in the State of São Paulo and bought in Araraquara (SP) supermarkets. All of the samples were analysed in duplicates. The high incidence of light filth (nº/50g) was 81,8% (1 to 36 insects fragments) for insects fragments in brand A and 82,5% (1 to 49 insects fragments) in brand B. There was a low incidence of mites and rodent hairs fragments. These results also suggest that is need a review about an acceptable leveI for light filth in Brazilian foods legislation. |
