Sumario:This article presents a reading of The lord of the flies, by William Golding, which aims to reflect on the construction of the social order and on the opposition between civilization and barbarism. For this study, we go through two philosophical movements that seek to explain the genesis and the mechanisms that conduct social coexistence: Naturalism and Contractualism. This theoretical framework carries some concepts that are pertinent to this paper, such as the “state of nature” and the “social contract”. As a result, we argue that Golding’s novel presents an allegorical narrative and symbolically reconstructs fundamental events in human history.
