Descripción
Sumario:Turning centuries are moments of retrospect of what happened and hope for the future. Thus, the article analyzes the perceptions of the 19th and 20th centuries in the press in Rio de Janeiro and Minas Gerais, between 1900 and 1901. We discussed the speeches that placed the eight hundred as a century qualified by lights and progress, as well as by wars and the split between Christianity and science. Then, we explored the reception of the 20th century and analyzed the expectations that were linked to the new century, discussing the projections of the future, marked by the conciliation between science and religion, by the continuity of progress and by the fear of war and hopes of peace. We conclude that the future, for the analyzed journals, should not interrupt progress and modernity, but unite them with religion.
