| Resumo: | The community of Bitupitá, located in the municipality of Barroquinha on the west coast of Ceará, has a distinct territorial appropriation system that is threatened by state fisheries policy. This study aims to characterize the fishing territoriality developed in Bitupitá to understand the relationships between environmental protection and respect for the ways of life of traditional communities, both protected by Brazilian law. The methodology included interviews (open and semi-structured) and participant observation, in conjunction with bibliographic research and analysis of the legislation related to the theme. As a result, the investigation revealed that corral fishing is an essential condition for the reproduction of the way of life and territorial identification of the Bitupitá community. Thus, the research demonstrated that state fishing regulations contradict certain principles and objectives guaranteed by the Brazilian legal system, such as the socioeconomic, cultural, and professional development of those engaged in fishing activities, as well as their communities and the fulfillment of the social and economic role of fishing. |
