Sumario:The National Solid Waste Policy recommends that, in adequate final disposal, only unserviceable waste should be released, which is not the case of organic waste that accounts more than a half of the urban solid waste generation in the country. In this context, this research aims to develop a proposal of a distinct collection of the organic fraction of household solid waste in Pici neighbourhood of Fortaleza-CE. It was observed that environmental education activities that aimed to raise awareness of adequate solid waste disposal were able to provide a representative participation of the population in the organic household solid waste segregation. The residue analysed is biodegradable and rich in nutrients which is able to anaerobic digestion. It was concluded that there is a necessity of involvement of the government and other institutions to ensure sustainability of the collection and reuse of organic waste systems.
