Resumo:The proofs that compose the complete rodeo (professional rodeo) in Brazil were officially recognized as an sportive activity in 2001, and their practitioners were considered as professional athletes. The campaign to get the approval of a federal law establishing the sportive character of those events begun in the middle of the 1990’s. In that time, Brazilian rodeos were yet constituted as megaevents, uniting leisure activities and competitions in the arenas of the festas de peão (cowboys parties) in a lot of Brazilian hinterland cities. The aim of this article is to describe and analyse the process of official reconnaissance of rodeos and the creation of specific rules to characterize each modality of this new sport.
