| Sumario: | The process of mass loss and muscle strength occurs differently for men and women; in the first group seems to occur gradually with increasing age, while in women, the most common is a sudden loss in muscle mass and function after menopause. The thickness of the adductor muscle of the thumb appears to be correlated with age, sex, race and complexion, and some studies reinforce its use as a non-invasive, quick and inexpensive technical alternative for the physical evaluation of the individual. The aim of this study was to systematically review the literature on studies that evaluated the nutritional status of adults and elderly individuals and used the Adductor Muscle Thickness (MPAP) as a parameter of comparison to other anthropometric techniques and to analyze agreement and the predictive power of EMAP as a discriminating factor of reduced muscle mass in postmenopausal women. We included in the systematic review all the papers presented in the databases: Medical Literature Analysis and Retrieval System Online (Medline) via PubMed, Scientific Electronic Library Online (SciELO), Latin American and Caribbean Literature in Health Sciences (Lilacs) , until the month of September, 2017; and the review protocol was recorded in the International Prospective Register of Systematic Reviews database. In the study, 53 postmenopausal women participated, responding to a structured questionnaire to evaluate sociodemographic variables (age, time in menopause, hormone replacement, presence of chronic diseases, smoking); and the anthropometric measures were evaluated: body mass, height, Thumb Adductor Muscle Thickness (MPAP) and Manual Prosthetic Strength (MPF); and body composition using Dual Energy X-Ray Absorptiometry (DEXA). In the systematic review of the literature, 978 original articles were found in the databases, and 3 were subsequently added from the references of the articles selected. After evaluating the titles, abstracts and reading in full, 37 studies were included in the final analysis. The results presented in the systematic review show that 62.1% (n = 23) of the presented papers found some type of EMAP relationship with another anthropometric parameter used. In the evaluation of the predictive power of EMAP, the mean age of the 53 participants studied was 61.9 ± 8.38 years, and the cut-off point determined for EMAP as a predictor of reduced muscle mass was ≤15.33mm (sensitivity 63 , 3 and specificity 73.9), with the area under the curve: 0.66 (95% CI 0.51-0.78). BMI, PA,% PP, PB, CMB, AMB, DCT, DCB,% G, and ASG were the main instruments used to evaluate nutritional status compared to EMAP. From the cutoff point proposed by the ROC curve, the EMAP was detected in 77% of the cases of muscle mass reduction identified by the gold standard. |
