Resumo:Initiatives advocated by the Open Access allowed new alternatives to access to scientific information published by researchers living in any part of the globe, that counts with information technology tools to create digital repositories and open access journals. Links of the main institutional repositories (IR), usually maintained by higher education, research institutions, governmental organizations and development agencies worldwide will be presented. There are more than 2600 digital repositories, in different parts of the world. Brazil has participated since the beginning of the development of these initiatives. Today, however, Brazil has 83 digital repositories, and about a thousand scientific open access journals. Every two years it holds an event dedicated to this theme, this is the result of partnership between the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation of Brazil, and the Ministry of Science and Technology of Portugal, held alternately in Portugal and Brazil. Will be present some of the most important global initiatives for Open Access, as well as in Brazil, highlighting the differences of IR implementation by Brazilian university libraries, the sudden deceleration of these initiatives in the country and, in conclusion, we will present some evidences, results and prospects future.
