| Resumo: | The purpose of this paper is to analyse the use of Portuguese verbal periphrases in the translation of German texts, by examining the elements of the source text that lead to this translation decision. Based on a German-Portuguese translation corpus of literary text, the occurrences of acabar de, parar de, deixar de and acabar por+Infinitive were collected and analysed regarding frequency and meaning. The elements of the source text that trigger or are associated with the use of the periphrases were then identified. The results of the analysis were compared with the descriptions of the meaning of verbal periphrases found in linguistic studies and grammars, verifying to what extent they were compatible with or complementary to existing studies. Finally, the data concerning periphrases referring to the end of situations were compared with the results of previous studies on the translational use of aspectual periphrases that focus on the beginning and middle part of situations. |
