| Summary: | In 2013, the art historian and scholar Hans Belting publishes Faces. Eine Geschichte des Gesichts, translated into English as Face and Mask: a double history. However, research on the face were already present in other of his works, such as Bild und Kult. Eine Geschichte des Bildes vor dem Zeitalter der Kunst (Likeness and presence – a History of the image before the Era of Art), 1990; Bild-Anthropologie. (An Anthropology of Images: picture, medium, body), 2001, and Das echte Bild. Bildfragen als Glaubensfragen, 2005. The face is one of the most significant and ubiquitous images, whether from the marketing, aesthetic, political or religious point of view (BELTING, 2015; AGAMBEM, 1996; DARWIN, 2014; COURTINE; HAROCHE, 2007) and mobilizes knowledge ranging from biology to psychoanalysis, through political science and art, but still without much attention from communication science. This article reflects on the legacy of Hans Belting for the study of the face in the media and the face as a media |
