Sumario:The monophthongization of the oral falling diphthong [eɪ̯] has been widely investigated in Brazilian Portuguese speech data. Studies reveal a strong influence of the following context composed of [ɾ] and of post-alveolar fricative consonants [ʃ, ʒ] and signalize an interference of speaker’s level of schooling. Despite the wide description in speech data, the constraints to the process have been little explored in reading aloud situations. Because of that, in this study, we analyzed the monophthongization of the oral falling diphthong [eɪ̯ ] in a reading aloud task performed by 12 university students from Sergipe, with the aim to investigate if there is a difference in the constraints of the process in different stylistic contexts. The categorization of the variants was developed considering the trajectory of the formants, an acoustic parameter that acoustically characterizes the diphthongs through the visual inspection of the wide-band spectrogram of Praat. Despite the restrictions in the reading aloud sample, the constraints to the process followed the same direction in both contexts, mostly concerning the influence of the following diphthong composed of tap and post-alveolar fricatives.
