Descripción
Sumario:This paper aims to demonstrate how 19th-century medicine influenced social norms, promoting matrimonial practices considerable civilized and chart the role of women in Brazilian society during that period. The article analyzes three medical theses produced between 1842 and 1864 at the Faculties of Medicine of Rio de Janeiro and Bahia that investigated the institution of marriage, focusing on the roles of women and the promotion of hygienic practices for a civilized matrimony. The analysis concentrates on understanding marriage as a civilizing institution and the role assigned to women as wives. It seeks to reveal how these medical theses not only reflected but also shaped social norms of the time, reducing women to their reproductive capacity and limiting them to the domestic sphere.
