If, on the one hand, the language was conceived as a reflection of thought, following a linear and successive path, there would be in the examples of poetic hieroglyph signs of a use of verbal language which overcomes these limitations of expression. The poet, searching for an intense expression of his ideas to the reader, overcomes the literal use of the words taking the sensorial and semantic resources of language. The reflection on the expression of thought is in the presentation of the Letter on the Deaf and Dumb, in how Diderot leads the reader through the analysis of examples of art works using the imagination, through the deaf and dumb character, questioning or rehearsing answers for explore its limits and possibilities.O conceito de hieróglifo é uma contribuição original de Diderot para a discussão sobre a relação entre a linguagem e o pensamento. Se por um lado, considerava-se que a linguagem refletiria o pensamento, procedendo sucessivamente e linearmente, haveria nos exemplos do hieróglifo poético indícios de um uso da linguagem verbal que supera essas limitações da expressão. O poeta, buscando expressar intensamente suas ideias para o leitor, excede o uso literal das palavras, utilizando-se dos recursos sensoriais e semânticos da língua.
