| Resumo: | The public debate about the socio-environmental agenda in the years of the Jair Bolsonaro (PL) government provoked reactions in Brazil and around the world. Between 2018 and 2022, the setbacks of environmental policy were accompanied by the growing appropriation of financial resources by the Armed Forces. This scenario goes back to the period of the military dictatorship, when the military ruled the country and, through the use of domestic and international propaganda, forged a very particular perception about the environment and the Amazon region. This article investigates the role of propaganda and disinformation at scale during the presidency of Jair Bolsonaro (PL) in the implementation of a project of national destruction for the socio-environmental agenda. The theoretical discussion and empirical results indicate that, between June and October 2020, past and present met in the new configurations of public opinion dispute, weaponizing propaganda and disinformation at scale as a government strategy to dismantle environmental protection. |
