| Sumario: | Smokers seek assistance for cessation process according to their dependence level. Our objective is to characterize smokers admitted for treatment as outpatient at the Nicotine Dependence Center – Botucatu Medical School according to nicotine dependence test. The population comprised a hundred individuals equally divided between sexes. The individuals were submitted to nursing and medical evaluation on their general health status, tobacco history and dependence level. The self-applied Fagerstrom Test for nicotine dependence was the tool used, leading to a final score with values graded in an assessment scale. Forty four percent of smokers reported light up the first cigarette of the day always within the first five minutes after waking up and this cigarette was more pleasant (73%) than any other. Almost half of the patients (46%) presented a high level of dependence according to the Fagerstrom Test, which was considered as being severe (7-8). The Fagerstrom Test, a systematic method of measuring physical dependency on nicotine, could be an important instrument to help choose suitable personalized treatment for smokers. |
