Sumario:The purpose of this work is to establish a connection between the modernization proposal held by the First Republic in Brazil and the built, in 1926, of São Roque Leprosarium, an isolation hospital aimed at sheltering all lepers of Parana State compulsorily. For that, it tries to get the republican ideology, it establishes and analyses the consequent actions of that idea, it sets the leprosarium in the net of isolation institutions created during the First Republic, in Curitiba, it describes that net as a stage of the modernization process and identifies the modern republican theme (science, technique, reason, progress, order, civilization) in this justifications of the existence of the São Roque Leprosarium. These aspects have been approached from the time-space relationship, having as a basis the lepers treatment evolution.
