Sumario:The use of artificial intelligence has been drawing the attention of many people around the world, given the technological leap that took place from September 2022, with the launch of ChatGPT and Bard, programs that use artificial intelligence and are capable, among other things, to generate texts in different styles, including academic texts of high scientific standard. According to authors, this capacity has generated discussions regarding the ethical use of the tool, after all, such texts can be presented as if they were written by human authors or developed without the proper bibliographical references, bringing several implications, such as plagiarism, the most discussed and recurring problem. The practice of generating texts with the aid of artificial intelligence directly affects the quality of education, and may affect distance learning more significantly, since, because the coexistence between professors and students is more distant, sometimes this practice ends up being difficult to detect. Therefore, it is necessary to know the main concepts about artificial intelligence and text generator programs with its aid, as well as the respective and most recent programs capable of identifying texts created through this method, in order to carry out a thorough analysis and mitigate the implications that the phenomenon of writing by artificial intelligence has caused. As a methodology, this research work originated from aconsistent updated bibliographical research and the application of a questionnaire to 150 students, with the analysis of the answers obtained by the 100 participating students.   Keywords: Distance education. Artificial intelligence. Scientific text. Plagiarism.
